We are thrilled to announce that we have won the ‘Excellence in Accessibility and Inclusivity’ award at the City of Swan Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.
This award recognises businesses that provide consciously inclusive services to welcome customers with disabilities, and this award is such a huge honour for us at The House of Honey.
As a tourism business, we welcome diversity with open arms, not just in our customers but our staff members too. Naturally, it is a cause close to our heart, and we are intentional to deliver the highest level of product and customer service to anyone and everyone who chooses us for their honey and hospitality needs.
Since our shop opened in 2010, there have been many changes and facelifts to the business. We have gone from a simple honey shop to having a café, Meadery, and buzzing calendar of workshops, to now a fully immersive bee and honey experience. And it is important to us that we make sure EVERYONE has the opportunity to enjoy what we have to offer.
Our commitment to accessibility has guided many decisions during the expansion of our shop. From step-free access, spacious ramp and handrails guiding down to our beautiful deck, bright and colourful language board displaying our talented multilingual staff, to Senior’s Day brunch and honey discount on Mondays. We have even been featured in the City of Swan’s Accessible and Inclusive Business Initiative campaign!
But recently, we attended the Tourism Council WA’s Accessibility workshop, where we learnt that our online accessibility measures are just as important as the efforts we are making offline. Now, we are in the process of designing a new website and upgrading our social media and website content. We are making sure that the accessibility measures we do and do not offer are clear, so that our customers can be comfortable and prepared in their decision to visit us here in the Swan Valley.

“We’ve been wholeheartedly throwing ourselves into improving our accessibility and inclusion and we are so delighted to be recognised for the steps we’re taking. Our business is for everyone, full stop, and we want to make our honey experience accessible to all. It is easy to take for granted the ability to jump in the car and venture out for the day. But for many, this isn’t a reality. In fact, 1 in 5 Australians have additional accessibility requirements, and there is a huge lack of experiences – and accessible information – for these visitors. We’re doing our bit to change that, so watch this space!” Kim Phillips, Managing Director.
Of course, we know the this is only the beginning of our Accessibility and Inclusion journey, and we are by no means a perfect example. But it is our commitment to making significant changes to our business that we are proud to have recognized by the City of Swan’s ‘Excellence in Accessibility and Inclusion’ award.
This is our opportunity to extend a big thanks to everyone who has been involved in our journey so far: The City of Swan, Tourism Council WA, and PWDWA – we couldn’t be doing this journey without you!
