Sustainable Beekeeping
Blending traditional beekeeping techniques as well as new age methods, everything we do is measured, managed, and sustainable. The House of Honey is about helping bee populations and hives thrive using good bee husbandry practices and following the national code for bio-security practices and never treating our hives with chemicals. Whilst we treasure our pure, WA honey, we will never over harvest, and the by-products from honey extracting are made into candles and tinctures.
Out In The Field
As migratory beekeepers, we move our 500 hives over the vast state of Western Australia state to collect the best nectar sources. In their mission to create honey, our 50 million bees also help to pollinate the diverse and vibrant flora and vegetation that is crucial to WA’s agricultural industry. We are picky with where we arrange our apiaries. We strictly avoid agriculture and GMO sprays and ensure that our hives are located at least 3km distance from such.
Experience and Education
With 50 years of passion and experience under our belt, we’ve made it our responsibility to share our insight with newbie beekeepers and local schools. Our calendar of events demonstrates how to get started as a beekeeper, how to practice safe and sustainable beekeeping, and how important looking after our bees is for the future of humans. Never shy with our knowledge, all our worker bees inside the shop share this knowledge with all our visitors.
Our EventsOur Shop and Production
We responsibly recycle all our waste and advocate for the use of recyclable materials. Our online orders are packaged with recycled materials to help minimize our wastage and single use packaging. All our takeaway items are within recyclable containers (no plastic), guests purchases are packed into paper bags, and where possible we encourage our guests to carry their larger purchases in leftover cardboard boxes.
Our shop and production are wholly supplied by solar energy via 78 personal solar panels located on our property, vastly reducing our carbon emissions. We also collect rainwater, which once purified is used during our honey production process.
Container Deposit Schemes
We’re limiting our business’ environmental impact by taking
advantage of Perth’s Container Deposit scheme. Every glass bottle or aluminium
can we produce or use within our shop is collected and recycled responsibly - and the change we receive from our deposit is donated straight to The Wheen Bee Foundation. A
new life for our plastic, glass, and aluminium containers – and a good deed for our beautiful WA bees, and a chance to give back to our environment.
Our Future
Always looking for an opportunity to grow and develop our business’ sustainability practices, we have the following future goals for 2024-2025:
- Invest in hive scales
- Assist University of WA’s “Save the Bees" Projects
