Thinking of Beekeeping? Here's why you should do a Beekeeping Workshop

3 minutes

Have you ever dreamed of seeing inside a hive, or maybe even setting one up in your own backyard?

Maybe you’re just a huge fan of West Australian Honey and are curious about where it all comes from. Whatever your reason, our beekeeping workshops are the perfect way to start your journey.

What Makes a Beekeeping Experience the Best First Step?

You can spend hours reading books, blogs, and online forums, or watching countless YouTube videos. But the truth is, the best way to learn anything is by doing. Instead of investing hundreds of dollars in a hive, suit, and tools before you've ever worked with bees, our practical beekeeping events let you get a real feel for the hobby.
Our Swan Valley Beekeeping Experience gives you a hands-on introduction to being a beekeeper. You'll get to put on a bee suit, use real beekeeping tools, and even hold a frame full of honey. Our experienced beekeepers will guide you through all the basics, sharing their expertise to help you start your own successful hive. This is one of the most engaging beekeeping events in the Perth, designed specifically for beginners.

What You'll Learn at Our Swan Valley Beekeeping Experience

This hands-on group workshop is perfect for aspiring beekeepers. You'll gain practical skills and knowledge, including:

  • Understanding the anatomy of the hive: Learn about the different parts of a hive and what they do.
  • Recognizing the Queen, Drones, and Worker Bees: Find out how to identify the different types of bees and understand their unique roles within the colony.
  • Safe handling of bees: Get comfortable using beekeeping equipment and learn how to interact with bees safely.
  • Sourcing your equipment: We'll show you where to find the best beekeeping gear to get started.
  • What to do in case of a sting or swarm: Be prepared with essential knowledge for common beekeeping situations.

You'll also have plenty of opportunities to ask our beekeeper any questions you have along the way.

Is This Beekeeping Event Right for You?

  • If you have a curiosity for bees, are considering starting your own hive, or just want to try a unique new experience, this workshop is for you. We assume all our guests are beginners, so we make sure to cover all the necessary information to get you started on your beekeeping journey.

Here are some frequently asked questions about our beekeeping events:

  • Can I join if I have no experience? Absolutely! This workshop is designed for complete beginners and will give you a full introduction to beekeeping.
  • Do I need my own suit? No, we provide all the necessary beekeeping suits, gloves, and veils. Just be sure to wear long white socks, closed-toe shoes, and long pants, and avoid heavily scented products.
  • What if I have a bee sting allergy? Due to the risk of bee stings, we cannot accommodate individuals with an anaphylactic allergy to bee venom.
  • Is this suitable for children? This workshop is for ages 14 and up. If you're looking for a family-friendly experience, check out our popular Honeybee Tour.

Here’s a breakdown of your 1.5-hour workshop:

  • Welcome & Talk: We'll start with a brief introduction to life in the hive.
  • Suit Up: You'll receive your bee suit and other equipment and get ready for the hive.
  • Open the Hive: Our beekeeper will introduce you to all the equipment, smoke the hive, and lift the lid. You'll get to see the inner workings of the colony and even try to spot the queen! This is a great time to take a few photos while holding a frame of bees and pure west Australian honey.
  • Tea on the Deck: After the workshop, we’ll head to the deck for a traditional Bush Tea experience with samples of bush food and fresh cut honeycomb. This is the perfect time to ask any final questions and share your experience with the group.
